The short version
- No account and no ads. The apps have no analytics or tracking; this website uses Google Analytics only if you accept it.
- Your music, separated tracks, lyrics and scores stay on your computer.
- Your microphone is analyzed live and never recorded or sent to us.
- Phones and TVs talk to your computer over your own local network.
- We only receive what you choose to send us, like a support email.
Who we are and what this covers
Cantaê (“we”, “us”) makes the Cantaê karaoke software. This policy applies to the Cantaê desktop app, the Cantaê mobile app (Android), the Cantaê TV app (Android TV / Google TV / Fire TV), the web app your computer serves to phones and TVs on your local network, this website, cantae.app, and Cantaê Classic, the previous version available on the Microsoft Store, which works the same way with fewer features.
Questions about privacy can be sent to support@cantae.app.
Data that stays on your devices
Cantaê is a local, offline-first application. Everything it creates is stored on the computer where it runs and is never sent to us:
- The list of your music folders, files and their tags (title, artist, album, genre, cover).
- Prepared song data: separated voice and instrumental tracks, lyrics, pitch reference and music analysis.
- Favorites, playlists, high scores, karaoke sessions (including the names participants typed and their scores) and your settings.
- Log files used for troubleshooting, kept for 7 days.
You can delete this data at any time by deleting Cantaê's data folder or uninstalling the app. Your original music files are only read, never copied, uploaded or modified.
Microphone
When scoring is on, Cantaê listens to the selected microphone to measure the pitch of your voice in real time. The audio is processed in memory and discarded; it is never recorded, stored or sent over the internet.
If a session uses the singer's phone as the microphone, the Cantaê mobile app sends the microphone audio directly to the computer running the session, over your local network, only during that singer's turn. The computer uses it for scoring and discards it.
Phones, TVs and your local network
During a karaoke session, the desktop app runs a small server on your local network so phones and TVs can join. It announces the session on your Wi-Fi (mDNS) so the apps can find it. Phones and TVs on the same network connect directly to your computer; nothing passes through our servers.
If you turn on Guests without Wi-Fi for a session, the room can also be reached at an internet address (https://….cantae.app) while it's open. For that, the computer asks our server for that address, which checks your license, and connects to a network provider. Phones using that address reach your computer through that provider, over HTTPS. What goes through it is the same as on the local network: names, requests, lyrics, covers and reactions. We don't store that content, and the address is deleted when the session ends. Over the internet, the TV and the phone as a microphone aren't available.
To join, a guest types a display name and the session PIN. That name, the songs they request, their reactions and their scores are shared with the other people in the same session and stored only on the host's computer. The phone also makes a random id, with nothing about the person in it, which the host's computer keeps with their scores so that phone can show its songs and numbers from earlier nights. Clearing the app's data (or the browser's) makes a new one.
The mobile and TV apps remember the session address, the name you used and your preferences on the device itself. You can erase them by clearing the app's data or uninstalling it.
App permissions
The Android apps ask only for what their features need:
- Camera (mobile app): to scan the session's QR code. Scanning happens on your phone; images are not stored or sent to us.
- Microphone (mobile app): only if you use your phone as the scoring microphone, as described above.
- Notifications and background service (mobile app): to tell you when it's your turn or someone suggested a song. These notifications are generated on your phone from your local network connection; we don't use push notification servers.
- Network access (both apps): to find and connect to the session on your local network.
Online services the desktop app uses
Cantaê works offline once songs are prepared. Some features contact third-party services directly from your computer. These requests contain only the information listed below; like any internet request, they also expose your IP address to that service.
- Lyrics services: to find synchronized lyrics. Sent: the song's title, artist, album and duration.
- A music information service: to find artist photos and genres, and to search songs that guests request. Sent: artist names, song titles and the search terms typed on phones.
- File hosting services: to download the AI models during setup. Nothing about you is sent.
- A network provider: only with Guests without Wi-Fi, to bring the room to the internet, as described above. The first time, the connection component is downloaded from a file hosting service.
- An update service: to check for updates in versions downloaded from our website. The Microsoft Store version is updated by the Store.
Each of these services has its own privacy policy. We don't send them any identifier of you or your device.
Diagnostics and support
Cantaê never sends crash reports or usage data automatically. If you need help, Settings › Diagnostics can save a .zip with logs, a summary of your computer, library errors and settings, with your user folder replaced by a placeholder. It is only shared if you choose to attach it to an email.
When you email us, we use your message, email address and any attachment only to help you, and keep them only as long as needed for that.
Purchases and license keys
Paid licenses are not on sale yet. Before they are, we will update this policy to explain what purchasing and activating a license key involves, including any payment provider we use.
This website
cantae.app uses Google Analytics to understand how visitors find and use the site (pages viewed, how you got here, approximate location (country and city), device, browser and language), only if you accept it in the cookie banner. If you accept, Google sets its cookies (such as _ga) and receives this information and your IP address, under Google's privacy policy. If you decline, nothing is loaded from Google. You can change your choice at any time with Cookie preferences at the bottom of every page. We don't use advertising cookies, don't use this data to identify you and don't sell it. The apps themselves have no analytics.
Your language and cookie choices are remembered in your browser's local storage, and the site's fonts are served from our own domain. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs (such as IP address and browser type) for a limited time to keep the site secure and running.
Children
Cantaê is made for the whole family and does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. A display name typed to join a session stays on the host's computer.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under Brazil's LGPD, the European GDPR and California's CCPA), you have the right to access, correct, delete or port your personal data and to object to its processing. Because Cantaê keeps your data on your own devices, you can exercise most of these rights directly in the app or by deleting its data. For anything we hold, such as support emails, write to support@cantae.app and we'll respond within the time required by law.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Significant changes will also be announced on this website before they take effect.
